Rationale
As designers we craft, make, and invent physical objects, spaces, and visual images to cultivate a quality of life. Design is not an isolated object of beauty, but an integral part of everyday life. We have seen that design can be a powerful force that changes the way of life, behavior, culture, education, way of communication, and our perception of the world. The motivations behind what we design are very critical. Our questions, assumptions, experiments, and solutions have proven that design can improve lives and find powerful solutions for man and his environment. Our efforts have been successful, but there is still much more.
We are re-learning, re-questioning, re-thinking, and will continue to re-invent our world with different design approaches that bring together technology, sustainability, crafts, politics, businesses, and much more. We all have questions that we are pursuing and ideas that we are experimenting with to create change. We believe that a designer’s work in progress should fight for good design. This International Symposium will be a venue for designers, artists, thinkers, and inventors from different fields to share their work in progress.
The Faculty of Art and Design, Rangsit University, Thailand would like invite researchers, designers, artists, thinkers, inventors, and makers from different disciplines to join us in our 3rd International Design Symposium entitled “Physique”
“Physique” implies various aspects in art and design. Its fundamental sense associated with human body has a significant role in all art and design field. Human body has been visually represented through images, photographs, paintings, and sculptures, while buildings, interior design, innovative products and clothing are designed to functionally accommodate human and provide physical protection to the body. In addition, human body has been transformed into different shapes in order for artists and designers to illustrate the ideal body, aesthetically or conceptually. Various methods of body transformation, ranging from body manipulation, body extension to body adornment have been widely engaged in art and design practice. Meanwhile, in the wider context, ideal body can also reflect sociocultural influence. As art and design are parts of human society and closely interact with social and cultural movements, changes of norms, values, aesthetic and human lifestyles are reflected on different ideal bodies created by artists and designers.
Considering the close relation of human body to art and design practice, the International Design Symposium will be a platform for artists, designers, thinkers and inventors from different fields to further explore the subject and present contemporary expressions of human body through different mediums of art and design disciplines.
The 3rd Rangsit University International Design Symposium work in progress 3 entitled “Physique” is held under the collaboration of the Faculty of Art and Design, Rangsit University, and the Council of Fine and Applied Arts Deans of Thailand. Our committee and participants are composed of professionals and academic from countries Thailand, Japan, Hong kong, India, The United States of America, Indonesia, France and Spain etc.
